MONTHLY LUNCHEONFirst Tuesday, Every MonthUniversity Club

The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Oregon, which for several years has been in a comparatively dormant state, has resumed its pre-war activities.

We began our year with our annual picnic on September 10, it being our first picnic since 1940. The secretary made a very unhappy choice of dates in two respects. In the first place, we intended to give a send-off to the three Portland boys who were entering college with the class of 1953, but found, to our dismay, that they had departed for Hanover on the day prior to the occasion. In the second place, although our weather had been perfect up to the day of the picnic, the day was most miserable, with a high wind and pelting rain. Nevertheless, eighteen loyal sons of Dartmouth braved the elements and made their way out to Arch Diack's farm on the Sandy River, where they huddled under the shelter of a half-roofed porch and partook of beer and barbecued beef and renewed old friendships. We intend to select a better date next year and hope to have our glorious Oregon summer weather!

On November 4, we had the pleasure of a visit from Al Dickerson '30. After a day of interviewing prospective Dartmouth students at our high schools, Mr. Dickerson was our guest at a dinner at the University Club and, despite the fact that it was the night before the traditional Oregon-Washington game, the occasion drew 28 of the local alumni, the largest turnout our small association has ever produced.

Those present for the dinner were: Leigh Martin '06, Harold Wendell '17, Irving Rand '18, Reginald Brummer '19, Bob Kendall '21, Peyton Hawes '23, Tom Colt '26, Fred Rowe '26, George Friede '27, SAm Martin '27, Paul Woelfel '27, Arch Diack '29, Bill Conklin '31, Sherman Pederson '31, Carl Hopkins '33, Bob Layzell '34, of Roseburg, Charles Mills '34, of Salem, George Boylston '55, Bill Thomas '37, John Laing '38, Horace Mecklem '39, Henry Morton '39, Jim Tredup '40, John Storrs '42, Charles Miller '43, Ed Miller '47, Leon Kuhn '49 and Tom Gianelli, Med.

Our number would have been larger had not our president, John A. Laing '05, been in New York on business and had not HaroldHirsch '29 and Jack Patrick '36 been busy with pre-marital engagements.

At the dinner, the members voted to resume our monthly luncheons and it was determined to meet at noon at the University Club on the first Tuesday of each month. Let any stray alumnus venturing out to our remote shores take note of the time and place of these luncheons and may we have an occasional welcome guest! Our first luncheon, held on December 6, was well attended, and we hope to have many pleasant gatherings throughout the year.
