On Saturday, May 13, Coach Tuss McLaughry culminated a rousing six weeks of spring practice by sending his charges through a long and bruising scrimmage on Chase Field, which lasted all the way through the long spring afternoon. Dividing the squad into two groups, each dressed in nice clean jerseys, the one white and the other green, Coach McLaughry had the two groups sitting on separate benches and practically glowering at each other, such was the extent of the competitive spirit. Starting with two aggregations made up largely of aspiring freshmen. Coach McLaughry gradually worked up until he had what will probably be next year's first offensive team playing against next year's first defensive team (with due allowance made for such operatives as Captain Paul Staley who play both offense and defense).

With these opposing groups going all out, the shock of meeting bodies could be heard all over the neighborhood. Mention of any individuals by name would be invidious at this stage and strongly against the (understandable) inclinations of the coaching staff. Your correspondent will therefore make only one observation, and that a general one about the freshmen. Despite a so-so record last fall in the wonand-lost department, there are a number of men coming up this fall who should be heard from for the next three years. There are several large, rough characters in the line who should bring a happy gleam to the practiced eye of John Dell Isola. And there are several backs, both scat and heavy-duty, who should make the work of backfield Coach Milt Piepul a happier exercise. We'll tell you more about them next fall.
