THE 1950 edition of the DartmouthAlumni Directory, scheduled for publication the last of this month, will list some 23,714 names of Dartmouth men. The compilation of the class lists and various indexes was directed by Miss Charlotte E. Ford, Dartmouth's alumni recorder.
The new directory is being produced by photolithography, a process which made it possible to include changes of address and other corrections up to the last few days before copy went to press, as well as permitting a substantial reduction in the price per copy.
Information gathered over the last 15 years, added to previous records, makes this edition half again as large as the preceding directory.
By most recent count, there are 16,361 living graduates of the College; 6,646 nongraduates; 172 special students; and 133 Navy affiliates. The Medical School claims 769 living graduates; Thayer School, 438; and Tuck School, 1069. Also listed are 208 holders of advanced degrees and 344 of honorary degrees. Deducting names mentioned twice, the grand total is 23,714.
Divided into three sections, the directory contains, in the first part, the names, addresses, and occupational symbols of all graduates and non-graduates of the College from the Class of 1876 through 1949, plus the graduates of 1950 who had then received degrees. Alumni are listed in the class with which they prefer to be affiliated. Those members of the Navy V-12 Unit who wished to be named as non-graduate associates are also included, beginning with the Class of 1945. Since their names would not otherwise appear in an alumni directory, the deceased members of classes from 1940 through 1949 are listed with their classes, with date and place of death.
The second section of the directory consists of a geographical index of all Dartmouth men whose addresses are known, with a symbol indicating occupation. This represents the general type of business or profession rather than the specific job.
In the third part is listed an alphabetical index of all living alumni; and deceased members of the classes from 1940 through 1949,with class reference.
Every effort was made by Miss Ford and her staff to have the addresses and occupations in the new directory as correct as possible. In the cases of those men who did not fill out the questionnaires sent to them, material already in the Alumni Records Office was used. Where no address is listed, a man is considered "lost," and information as to his whereabouts will be greatly appreciated by the Alumni Records Office. At present the "lost" alumni number 31 graduates and 177 non-graduates.
Orders for the 1950 Dartmouth AlumniDirectory accompanied by a check for $4 per copy, made out to "Dartmouth Publications" and sent to Baker Library, Hanover, N. H. will be filled as soon as possible after publication.
