A. Statement by Bishop Dallas
October 1951

The following personal statementconcerning Dr. Tucker and the establishment of the William Jewett TuckerFoundation has been prepared for the ALUMNI MAGAZINE by the Rt. Rev.John T. Dallas, D.D. '22, retired Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire.Bishop Dallas was Rector of St. ThomasChurch in Hanover from 1920 to 75125.Since then he has kept in close touchwith Dartmouth and has maintained adeep interest in the spiritual life ofthe College.

DR. TUCKER stood out in the Dartmouth family as a father. His appearance and his voice held the respect of everyone who came into his presence. His command of people went beyond Hanover and the alumni of the College. Throughout the land, his thinking and his character drew attention. He was a leader in his generation: and, for this reason, he understood the times in which he lived. He knew the conflict within the souls and the minds of the young men who came to Dartmouth College from all over America.

He carried on in his own way. He did not imitate his predecessors. Nevertheless, he saw that from the days of the founding of the College there was always a purpose at work, an aim to send out into the life of the nation men who were bound to keep the nation in the paths of peace, honor and righteousness. In Dr. Tucker's addresses on big occasions as well as in his so simple talks in the college chapel, he made his listeners see the opportunity and the responsibility to build themselves into the day which was theirs.

The William Jewett Tucker Foundation has an ideal which is of the very spirit of Dartmouth. Long after those who knew Dr. Tucker have gone, his work will continue, his great hope that the men of Dartmouth will show the nations of the world that in the "hunger and thirst after righteousness" is peace and happiness. The friends of Dartmouth everywhere are grateful to President Dickey and to the Trustees that they too would build upon the same cornerstones as did Dr. Tucker.
