If the Indian cross-country runners don't place well up in the Heptagonal League this fall it will be no fault of Coach Ellie Noyes. Noyes has kept up a running correspondence this summer with his top men and by the time they got to Hanover on September as, all they should have needed was a little polishing.

On top of this, by some strange miracle, there were no losses by graduation although two lettermen will not be available this fall. Led by Captain Stan Smiley, the team has four other varsity runners—Sam Daniell, Tom Ritner, George Rosenberger and Don Richardson. Noyes rates Captain Smiley as one of the top runners in the Heptagonal League this year.

Last year's frosh captain, Walt Clarkson, will undoubtedly step up to run with the main group, while other sophomores behind Clarkson should make for a stronger squad than in 1950.

Despite these top prospects, there are some worries about depth, and a few injuries or mishaps to any of the first five men could well alter the entire picture.

Perhaps the new four-and-one-quarter mile course that has been laid out, circling the golf course and going through the Vale of Tempe, will help. It is certainly much less difficult than the tortuous fivemile course of two years ago.

Considering everything, it looks like Dartmouth is off to a normal year athletically. No championships are promised, nor are any expected. The College has always fielded teams that fight and can be counted upon to display not only ability but also sportsmanship. It will continue to do so in
