"How Did You Do It?"
October 1951

An answer to this question is attempted by the co-chairmen of1926's Combined Fund, Albert E. M.Louer of Chicago and Robert M.Stopford of New York.

AT our big 25th Reunion last June we were asked many times the hard question "How did you do it?" How 1926 managed to raise almost $150,000 is still something of a mystery to us although we are quite clear that no two men alone did, or ever could, raise such a sum from one Dartmouth class of 550 men. No, the answer lies in the efforts and generosity of many men, and the $142,548 Fund presented by 1926 in celebration of its 25th Reunion is as fine an example as you will find of an achievement in the true Dartmouth tradition.

First, there were the members of the class who gave: the loyal and enthusiastic men whose names are listed following this report. Just about 400 men, or 72% of the class contributed, a very widespread response. Their gifts ranged from $1 to $15,000, the latter amount contributed anonymously by a class member toward the end of the campaign. Thirty-six men contributed $1,000 or more to qualify as recipients of a special gold key award. Thirteen memorial gifts were made in memory of deceased '26 men by their relatives. One non Dartmouth friend of the class gave $1,000. All credit certainly belongs to those whose gifts, large or small, played their part in the total.

Second, there were the workers: some go men who matched countless hours of spare time against the rest of the class to make certain that no '26er was unaware of the Fund and its purpose, and to assure that their checks arrived in Hanover by the time of reunion.

Third, there was the novel plan which 1926 used during its final year: a Combined Fund arrangement that included the 1951 Alumni Fund objective along with the permanent endowment fund. Through this technique the whole class was able to concentrate on one job with a large over-all objective of $126,000. Only in this way did the task of raising over $100,000 in the final nine months become possible. Carle Blunt, the one who conceived this and numerous other fruitful ideas, deserves Special credit for the vital role he played in the effort.

Fourth, and perhaps most important, there was the cause of it all: Dartmouth, the purpose which made all the time, effort, planning and generous gifts worthwhile. It is a source of tremendous satisfaction to the class to know that throughout the years ahead the income from the 1926 Fund will be continually at work for Dartmouth. We all hope the classes coming along will step up and take on a large $100,000 plus class numerals—objective.
