This is a thorough revision of the excellent secondary school text which was first published in 1940. Each of the chapters of the original edition has been brought up to date, and, in addition, a brief historical background precedes each chapter to give the setting for the material covered. These chapters deal with: democracy; clear thinking; newspapers; consumer economics; co-operatives; big business; money and prices; labor; rights of women; social security; crime; leisure; youth; conservation; transportation; taxation; international relations.

Seven new chapters have been added. These treat problems connected with religious and racial understanding, the family, education, housing, farming, making Congress more efficient, and amending the treaty-making power.

This revision provides a very satisfactory text for courses in general social science in the secondary schools. Being written for such use, it is rightly descriptive rather than analytical. Its value is greatly enhanced by a generous use of pictorial material, charts, and diagrams.
