This Chicago town can be about the coldest darn burg in the country every once in a while, and having struggled to get the old bus started these past few mornings with the mercury hovering around 24 I'm about ready to toss in the towel and think a little seriously about Florida and California. But in the coal business, buddy, a winter vacation is heresy.
The telephone jangled the other evening and Warner Bishop was hanging on the other end. Having a few hours to kill in Chicago between trains provided an excellent opportunity to give old Stillman a ring and catch up on some class doings. "Bro Bish" has been hitting the road a bit for Archer-Daniels-Midland. He was returning from Minneapolis and reported that everything is fine in the land of the sky blue water. He bumped into JohnKelly, called Krieger, saw Tom Oakes, and reported Vinnie Else well and happy. Bish reports having heard from and seen Jack Schwer not long ago, and that Jack's greeting card business is flourishing. Warner and his charming wife Kay Sue are planning on getting to Hanover for reunion. A note from "Stew"Steffey to "Stu" May indicated they too were all set, and are expecting to make the trip back with the Bishops and the Ossie Mills. How about the rest of you guys? Been thinking about it? Remember your 10th reunion is June22, 23, and 24.
Another good first-hand reporter around these parts is Stacy Hill. Since he practically commutes between Cincinnati and Chicago he is a good man to have around. Over the Christmas holidays he was home, but reports not seeing Lew Johnstone. Reason being that Lew and family were sunning in Florida for a spell lucky guy. Around Chicago he reports that Alex Salm is no longer associated with the Stevens Hotel, but now with a hotel supply company. In town for a while is Bill Danforth for the International Boat Show and if all goes well Bill, Stace and myself will have lunch together tomorrow at the Stock Yards Inn, and find out what's new in the anchor business.
"Bud" Rothermel has recently been named an associate agent, and head of the life and accident department for Moore, Case, Lyman, and Hubbard here in Chicago. Bud has done an outstanding job, and along with his new promotion it is interesting to note that he made the million dollar round table this year, having written over a million dollars worth of business during 1950. Bud has been associated with Moore, Case since 1941. He was in the Army until 1945. He is a graduate of the L.I.A.M.A. school and became a C.L.U. in 1949.
A note from "Stu" May a short time ago included some dope about a few other classmates. Stew Steffey now has three youngsters two girls and a boy. The boys are the oldest and little Sue Anne Steffey is the babe of the family, having put in her appearance about a year ago. A short note on a class dues bill from Norm Jones announces child number three Elizabeth Lewis Jones. The Gil Hurd's second youngster, Michael Start Hurd, was born September 14, 1950. Their other boy is now about two and a half.
Thought you would like to know that BillClark is back in service. The most I can give you is Capt. William Clark, 97th General Hospital, APO 757, c/o PM, NYC.
That's about it for this month. One thing I want to add, though, is to suggest that anyone wishing to serve on the Reunion Committee drop me a note and I'll see that Stace contacts you. As you know there will be lots of things to do in preparing for this affair, and those having the inclination and time to volunteer will be greatly appreciated. We want to make it a wonderful reunion. The best way of course is to have everyone attend. Don't forget those dates June 22-24. See you again in April.
