THE Freshmen Fathers' Weekend, introduced last year with great success, was repeated on February 16 and 17 for the Dads of 1954 men. It enjoyed a turnout of 250 fathers from si states and Canada, which was well ahead of the attendance of 185 fathers last year. The program for the second annual weekend followed the general pattern of the first one, with plenty of opportunity given for fathers and sons to experience together the informal, everyday activities of the freshman class. Classes, faculty conferences, meals in Commons, athletic events, and rest (?) in the dormitories took up most of the two days. A banquet in Commons on Friday night gave fathers a chance to hear President Dickey and Dean Stearns Morse. The program for the after-dinner smoker included Prof. Allen R. Foley '20, songs by the 1954 Glee Club, and the latest Dartmouth movies.
To start the second semester the Great Issues Course turned to "The International Scene." Guest lecturers from beyond Hanover include Prof. Ralph E. Turner of Yale; George A. Morgan, Foreign Service Officer of the U. S. Department of State; Vera Micheles Dean of the Foreign Policy Association; Abraham H. Feller, Director of the Legal Department of the United Nations; Charles Malik, Lebanese Minister to the United States; Nelson A. Rockefeller '30; and Dean Rusk, Assistant Secretary of State.
As a necessary part of its application for an Air Force ROTC unit the College last month polled students and faculty to ascertain their views and interest in the establishment of such a unit at Dartmouth. The Air Force program, now pending, contemplates the establishment of approximately 25 ROTC units in the northeast section of the country. Similar to the Navy "contract" program already in operation at Dartmouth, the AFROTC plan provides opportunity for men to pursue their general college education while training for military service as commissioned officers.
Television was a new wrinkle in the coverage of Winter Carnival this year, and many Dartmouth men had the unexpected pleasure of seeing snow-decked Hanover in their living rooms. On March 30, from 4:4.5 to 5:00 EST, the Dartmouth Glee Club will be featured on the Kate Smith television hour. A chain of 37 stations from the East to the Middle West will carry the program.
