Operating with no strain whatever, Coach Michael's swimmers celebrated Carnival by submerging Princeton by the score of 51-24. This contest was the fifth consecutive win for the Dartmouth team this season, and enabled them to retain their undefeated status. The margin might have been even wider, had not Coach Michael opened the gates of mercy and given some of his reserves a chance in the later events, notably the 440-yard relay, which was the only event that Princeton won. The star of the Princeton team, a world-record-breaking breaststroker, was ill and did not compete, a factor which was probably equalized, as far as the final score was concerned, by the Dartmouth practice of using their reserves in several events.
The most notable events of the afternoon were the pool records negotiated by Dartmouth's Deane Hillsman, who swam his backstroke leg of the 300-yard medley relay iii the time of 61.9 seconds, and by Neil Bersch who won the 200-yard backstroke in 3:24.6. Prior and Boyden were the other two Green performers in the medley relay. The 220 freestyle was won by Bill Duke of Dartmouth, with Gordie Kay of the Green in third place. Dartmouth swam one-two in the go-yard freestyle, with Captain Jock Mclntyre and Lee Coulter finishing in that order. In the dive, Dan Rownd was first and Bowler was third, to give the Green first and third. In the 100-yard freestyle, Mclntyre came in first, with Princeton in second and third. Frank Bruch, holder of the College record in the breaststroke, won the 200-yard event in his specialty, with Weber of Dartmouth third. In the 440-yard freestyle, Spurgin and Luker of Dartmouth took first and second. The final event, the 440-yard relay, was, as noted, the only event won by the visitors, with Dartmouth swimming several of its less high-powered natators. All in all. therefore, it was a highly satisfactory afternoon for the home forces, who continue to live up to their collective promise as perhaps the greatest swimming team Dartmouth has ever had.
SET BACKSTROKE RECORDS: In helping to defeat Princeton, 54-21, in the Carnival meet, two sopho- more backstrokers set Dartmouth pool records. Deane Hillsman (right) bettered his own mark by swimming the first 100-yard leg of the medley re- lay in 1:01.9, while Neil Bersch won the 200-yard event in the record-breaking time of 2:24.6.
