As an author, Lowell Thomas Jr. '46 is enjoying a success in keeping with the title of his book, Out of This World, which has reached first place on the best-seller list of non-fiction. Published by the Greystone Press, his fast-selling and fast-moving book is based upon the journey undertaken by himself and his famous radio-commentator father, to Lhasa, and their adventures among the mountain peaks of Tibet.
Fate would seem to have been a willing collaborator in providing adventures for the narrative. When Lowell Thomas Sr. suffered a serious accident on a 17,000-foot mountain pass, his son had to shoulder the responsibilities of getting his father to safety, taking over his radio broadcasts, running the caravan, and making the still and motion pictures for the expedition. The resulting book, with over 100 illustrations, is an exciting adventure story, and is also penetrating in its descriptions of the people in this remote part of the world.
Lowell Thomas Jr. has already been a member of seven expeditions. While in the Army Air Force he was an official participant of the Bikini Atom Bomb project, and on another occasion he flew around the world with Air Secretary Symington.
