Western Connecticut has finally come of age as a potentially important Dartmouth center. In the most encouraging showing in recent years, about one hundred Dartmouth men gathered at the Wee Burn Club in Darien on April 4, to hear Coach "Tuss" McLaughry and Prof. Al Foley '20 bring the latest tidings from Hanover, and to set up a new and revitalized organization designed, in the words of the new constitution, "to advance the interests of Dartmouth College; to promote good will among Dartmouth men; and to create good will for Dartmouth College in the respective communities in which the members of the Club reside."
In a brief business meeting the Club elected Windsor C. Batchelder '19 president for the year 1951-2. Other officers chosen were Nelson B. Krogslund '34, vice-president; Josiah B.Chandler '30, Secretary; and Otto J. Calder '35, treasurer. A Board of Governors was elected to include, in addition to the officers, Malcolm J. Edgerton '06, Everett E. Robie '17, Eugene D. Toiuler '17, Curtis A. Abel '25, Ellmore A. Hammesfahr '28, Jack D. Gunther '29, Slocum Chapin '36, George V. McCleary '36, Charles C. Keyes '38, Edward IV. Miller '40, and Alfred Fritzsche '48.
When the Club was originally formed in the early Thirties, there were less than a hundred alumni in the area. That number has more than trebled so that today more than 350 Dartmouth men live or work or both in the area embraced by the Club. To appeal to the varied interests of the group and to make it a potent force for Dartmouth in the area, the Club has been reorganized and strengthened. A new constitution, drawn up by a committee headed by Win Batchelder was adopted at the last meeting.
Ev Robie is whooping it up for the May 4 meeting, when the Club plays host to the combined Dartmouth clubs in Connecticut. PresidentDickey and Eddie (Death) Dooley '26 are to be there; and on the basis of the turnout on April 4, Ev sees no reason why the meeting should not draw one of the largest crowds of Dartmouth men in Connecticut.
