As ye sec, after a too short summer, pulls his Little Dandy No. 6 portable over creaking knees, gratified to find the paunch encroaching only slightly more upon the spacing bar, thoughts are on the problem of news gathering in the year ahead. And that echo you hear sounds suspiciously like somebody said "after two years it's about time you thought, Buster."

The problem as to quantity has never been too serious in this gloriously active group of Indians, for even the half-kidding remark last June, "What ever happened to Emerson?" drew counter-fire which included even a very fine briefing on Will's accomplishments from one of the older classes. It also included, strangely enough, a letter from the man himself with his personal report on the Midwest showing that over a period of months he has beaten Sam McCray at golf, acted as advisor to Bob Corwin in the construction of a back porch, found Mac McCloskey very, very busy with the latest arrival in the household, and, on vacation in northern Michigan, met a family who live next door to Hank Peirce in Indianapolis. You see what I mean about quantity?

The problem, going into the third year, is perhaps more one of variety and as the plate passes among you, brethern, any thoughts or contributions along these lines will be remembered when the roll is called up yonder.

This month we should have moved faster to the news at hand, but a pile of clippings up to your ears is almost too lovely to scramble. However, for the record, although perhaps covered earlier and better by that virtuoso of piano, bull fiddle and magazine circulation:

VITAL STATISTICS.... On August 9, in Toledo, the former Marcia Dodd became Mrs.Frank W. Parmelee Jr., with Bill Daniells in the role of prompter. Mrs. Parmelee is a graduate of Smith ... a further raid upon our eligible bachelors is planned for October 13 when Miss Suzanne Lyon of New York, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Edwin S. Lyon of Akron, 0., will wed one Franklyn John Jackson of Brooklyn. Miss Lyon is a graduate of Miami University of Ohio and is a member of the Junior League of Akron. Mr. Jackson may be happily recalled as the previous holder of the franchise in this spot, one whose fondness for the Junior League has always been very evident, whether Brooklyn is in first place or last.

A more solemn note under this heading has to be added, however, in passing on word, received during the summer, of the deaths of Brad Hill and Bill Barrett.

SERVICE NEWS... is this, perhaps, encroaching, t00.... Major John W. Lynch in June arrived in Korea to join X Corps headquarters where he is serving with the corps' judge advocate section. He was previously post judge advocate at Camp Edwards. Jack, who practised law in Cambridge before entering the Army in 1942, served in Italy during World War II.... Sammy Sampson, rank unknown, located at Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington and living in Falls Church, Va. ... Cmdr. Rowland S. Wilson has been awarded the Bronze Star for outstanding achievements in Korea during re-deployment of UN troops from Inchon in December, 1950. Roily was commanding officer of Organized Surface Division 4-94 and volunteered for active duty at the outbreak of the Korean War.

HANOVER VISITORS since last reported include Mr. and Mrs. Art Reinherz and family, Mr. and Airs Bill Callihan and Dr. andMrs. Jack Wholey. Things were a little quiet during the summer, but it'll be awful nice up there in the fall. And if you're sensitive, you can look over at the hills before and after half-time.

This department this month will be known as CATCH AS CATCH CAN as we grudgingly pluck away at our beautiful stack of notes and clippings ... for instance, first we are confronted with the happy physiognomy of MoeFrankel and the information that this former head of the social studies department in the East Orange high school, known throughout the nation's school circles for his advances in high school social studies, has resigned to take a position with the Joint Council on Economic Education in New York City. In his new post, Moe will continue to work in education. The Council is a non-profit educational organization created for the purp.se of assisting school systems to improve the quality of their social and economic education. .. the Diamond Match Cos. announced in June the election of Perry Woodbury as treasurer ... the Dartmouth Club news tells us that same Perry is taking up residence in New York, coming on from Chicago. ... Harlan Banks has been named head of the botany department at Cornell where he took his Ph.D. in 1940.... Dave Callaway was elected vice-president of the Municipal Bond Club of New York. . . . Hank Werner has been named treasurer of the Horace Mann Alumni Association... . Gilmore is running for the state legislature in Arizona (adv.). Send for your absentee ballots, two votes from each of us is all he'll need for election.... Sam Carson, in Toledo, has been moved up to general agent of the Aetna Life Insurance Cos. from his former position of associate general agent. A native of Toledo, Sam has been with the Aetna since graduation, is a Chartered Life Underwriter and the father of five children, all of which gives you other insurance peddlers something to strive for... . Stewart G. Anderson, career officer of the U. S. Foreign Service, has been transferred from Bogota, Colombia, where he served as Consul, to the regional office of the Institute of International Education at Denver, Colo. ... JimDarling, formerly western manager for American Home Magazine, has been appointed product manager in the Franklin Baker Division of General Foods Corporation.. . . Harry B. Gilmore has resigned as treasurer of the Berkshire Mutual Fire Insurance Company in Pittsfield, Mass., to join the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Company, Manchester, in an investment capacity. Gilly, who went to Pittsfield in 1949 from the Bank of New York, has been active in community affairs in Pittsfield ... four new senior vice-presidents elected by the American Express Cos. on August 1 include Tom Clark, who is vice-president and treasurer ... an interesting Times article on historic houses and how to find them mentions our Fred Rath as director of the National Council for Historic Sites and Buildings, formed in 1947 to aid local groups whenever a historic site or building is threatened with destruction. (It is sad to think that such a group was not active at the time the historic Pilver building in Lewiston, Vt., was carried off by the termites.)

And speaking of termites reminds us that Widmayer in his annual pastoral letter spoke gently of sharpening his axe on the more verbose of his brood. This of course means the other guys, but perhaps we should be cautious and save something for next month.

We did get up to Monroe last June as reported by Scherman, only to find that the way to first base still lies up the side of the Catskills. But a wonderful time was had by all.

We did get to that North Shore clambake this year to join Dick and Mary Emerson in whaling the bejeezers out of a couple of boiled live lobsters with an empty beer bottle.

And as a final note to Stangle and other friends of Jake Edwards things are normal again. Edwards is worrying about base hits. This time it's the base hits of a very good Little League sticker name of Rock Edwards, but what does it matter, so long as you're happy. Tempus as well as space in this column sure fugits.
