One of the noted travelers who returned last month from abroad, Ellis O. Briggs '21 was on his way from his former post as Ambassador to Czechoslovakia to begin his new responsibilities as Ambassador to Korea. Perhaps his most pleasant unofficial duty between these important assignments was to wish good luck to his son Everett Ellis, accepted by Dartmouth, and a freshman in this fall's Class of '56.
Mr. Briggs' three-year term of service in Prague was marked by the world-wide publicity resulting from the case of William Oatis, sentenced by Czech authorities to 10 years' imprisonment on espionage charges. Upon his recent arrival in New York, Mr. Briggs stated to a New York Herald Tribune reporter, "My transfer makes no difference so far as the Oatis case being the Number One item on the agenda of our business with Czechoslovakia."
A member of the American Foreign Service since 1925, Mr. Briggs has served in several countries in Europe, South America and the Orient. He was ambassador to Uruguay from 1947 to 1949, when he was named to the embassy in Czechoslovakia. From 1945 to 1947 he was director of the Office of American Republics Affairs in the Department of State.
