The 1951-52 operations of the Dartmouth College Athletic Council resulted in a net loss of $79,710, it was disclosed by William H. McCarter '19, director of athletics, in his annual financial report. The year's loss was covered by general college funds.
With operating expenses actually $4,000 below those of the preceding year, the drop from the modest surplus of 1950-51 was entirely due to a decline in football receipts. Varsity football posted a net profit of $102,625 which was $27,000 more than needed to cover the deficits of all other sports, but far short of financing total costs of $107,178 for administration, equipment, training room and athletic plant maintenance. Basketball had an improved showing with a deficit of only $3,174, while lacrosse, track and freshman football were also down considerably in net cost.
Said Mr. McCarter in his report, "The pattern seems to be set by which intercollegiate athletics at Dartmouth can no longer be a profitable business but rather will be an annual expense."
