A nostalgic souvenir of the past and a grim reminder of the present comes to my desk this month in a copy of the Pacific Stars andStripes; reminder of many such editions which were the only news during the unpleasant years of the war overseas and a nudge to the realization that many of the class are back in uniform again.

Captain Sidney B. Cardozo, officer in charge of the newspaper, is featured with General Matthew B. Ridgway on the occasion of the latter's surprise visit to the editorial offices of the paper to express his appreciation for the "outstanding" job the journal is doing. Most of us can know of the boost to morale that such a publication can be and will concur with the General in his endorsement.

In that most political of all political states, home of the excise tax and Henry Long, Representative Belden Bly, Rep., of Saugus, has introduced a bill to make the manufacture in that state of clothing which contains inflammable materials illegal. Bly's bill provides for a $100 fine or 30 days in jail for violation of the law. Still in the home of the fish and the cod, District Attorney Hugh A. Clegg of Essex County announced the promotion of AlbertP. Pettoruto, Lawrence Attorney, to third assistant D.A. Sometime we'll whip up a quick survey of all the law-enforcement officers of one sort or another in the class; now that the boys have left the FBI in droves, perhaps the figure will be unimpressive, but it might be well even so to know where one has to be careful; for instance if one gets into trouble in Lebanon, County Solicitor Jones is a dangerous man,—hire Tesreau to defend you.

From Thorns, Merrill & Company of Newark in the sovereign State of New Jersey comes word of the addition to their staff of Mr.Arthur E. Koeppel Jr., C.P.C.U.

"Mr. Koeppel is a graduate of Dartmouth and also has a Master's Degree from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration and Finance. After several years of banking experience in the Marine Midland Trust Co. and the Federal Reserve Bank in New York, he served three years overseas with the Army in World War II. Since 1946 he has been associated with E. J. Habrich & Co., Hackensack insurance agency, and for the past two years has been Secretary-Treasurer of that firm. While in Hackensack he served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Bergen County Association of Insurance Agents, and is currently President of the Hackensack Association of Insurance Agents. He was awarded the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (so that s what it means!) designation in 1949." Incidentally, there are only 27 C.P.C.U.'s in the whole State of New Jersey!

A recent swing through the hinterlands of Connecticut, Vermont and Massachusetts on Official College .Business brought the undersigned to the abode of one Rod Washburn, mogul of the Plainville Casting Co. and proprietor of a small manse in the residential section of that industrial town. With the responsibilities of a going business, the problems of three children and a television set, Rod is kept active and out of mischief. Having checked during the past months on several 1938s in their home environment, I can assert from limited evidence that the responsibilities of parenthood and gainful employment have a very sobering effect on members of the class, even if they don't produce more than a small scattering of gray hairs (H. S. Connor, please note).

This merely serves as advance notice to several members of the group who are contemplating or who have recently entered the socalled "blessed state," to wit: "Miss Gene Beverly Grace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd H. Grace of Rouses Point, N. Y., was married on Saturday to John William Sinclair of Glen Cove. The bride was graduated from the Champlain Valley School of Nursing, Mr. Sinclair served as an engineering officer in the U. S. Merchant Marine. He is area manager of the Nassau Suffolk Branch of the Sinclair Refining Co."

"Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Fillmore, of Princeton Ave. (Detroit), announce the engagement of their daghter Constance to Joseph C. Shenstone. The bride-elect is a graduate of Hillsdale College where she was affiliated with Pi Beta Phi. Her fiance is a graduate of Dartmouth and the University of Michigan."

"Daughters to: Mr. and Mrs. John D.Meachem, Dec. 16"—where that one comes from, I don't know, but presume it is somewhere near Manlius, N. Y.

Having last month reported the unexpected appearance in New York of one JohnDonovan from the distant miasmal swamps of India, comes the time to reveal the presence in this part of the world of John D. Johnson, formerly of the distant miasmal swamps of West Africa. Now when Reilly shows up from the d. m. s. o. Worcester, the roster will be complete.

Lou Kraft is reported as with the Southern New England Telephone Co. in New Haven; I wonder if he still has L.K. 38 for a license plate? Dr. John B. Harmon now resides in Silver Spring, Md. John T. Stevenson is now with the American Thread Co. in Valley Stream, N. Y. Michael F. Sullivan is with the VA Regional Office in Nashville, Tenn. JohnA. Graham classifies himself as an "Engineering Writer" and is with Convair, Guided Missile Div., in Pomona, Calif.

Just to keep up to date on 1938's activities in Dartmouth Club and other activities, here is a break-down of the Class as contained in the latest Directory of Alumni Officers: JamesE. Cooney of Des Moines, Alumni Councillor, District IV: Robert S. Stearns of Bridge- port, Conn., Secretary of the Bridgeport Association; Russell F. Tolles of Middlebury, Conn., Secretary of the Naugatuck Valley Dartmouth Club; Louis J. Fortuna, Secretary- Treasurer of the Dartmouth Club of Georgia (resident of Decatur, Ga.); Ralph van Orsdel, President of the Dartmouth Club of Hawaii; William H. McMurtrie (where have I seen that name before?), Secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Indianapolis; William Schopflin, President, "Heart of America" (Kansas City) Dartmouth Alumni Association; John R.McLane Jr., Secretary, Dartmouth Alumni Association of Manchester; William Bronk, Secretary, Dartmouth Alumni Club of Glens Falls; Warren G. Flynn, President, Dartmouth Outing Club of New York.

By the time this reaches you through the unusually slow facilities of the U.S. Mails, we shall be into another Alumni Fund Cam- paign. You will be hearing, therefore, from friend Mallory and his corps of eager agents. As every year, remember that you save them a lot of work by forking over promptly without undue checking on their part. Even if you plan to sink lots of dough into the political campaign, save some for 1938!
