Sad news always reflects itself on the month's activities, and this month it is my unfortunate duty to report the sudden death of Sam Main. To call such occurrences "unexpected" is usually superfluous, but in this case the suddenness struck down one who appeared to be in the top of his career. A more complete notice appears in the "In Memoriam" department of this issue.

Boston will miss Sam's interest when he was in that city, and Boston could well stand more like him. When I went down between the halves of the Harvard Game, I met no one from the Class at all —just Harry Tanzi and some of the old faithfuls. On returning to the peanut gallery, I did almost walk over Stearns MacNutt and family, so at least one member of the august body of 1938 made the Allston pilgrimage, besides Brownell & me. What ever happened to pre-game dinners, weekly luncheons, and other affairs of the past? Not having made the Bowl imbroglio, I can't vouch much for New York. Perhaps Princeton?!

All of which enters into the important matter of class affairs, and particularly Reunion. New York has declined the privilege of running same, several individuals have graciously indicated a lack of enthusiasm, and Boston is obviously non compos mentis on the subject. I hope that by next issue I shall be able to report an enthusiastic com- mittee working into the small hours in a smoke-filled room.

Fodder for their deliberations recently arrived from the world's outstanding authority on Reunions, Pres Downer. Little-known during his college days as an expert on such matters, mainly because he had never been on one, Pres began his career rather slowly, building a sound foundation for his crowning performance at the 15th. Those present on that happy occasion will always remember the superb technique, remarkable durability, and high level of humor of that threeday marathon. From the vantage point of his research and experience, Pres makes the invaluable suggestion "Will you kindly use your influence and see to it that the 1958 Reunion Committee is a little more qualityconscious than the group was in 1953? After only four years' wear, my boater is beginning to look a little shabby (evidence attached). Either we're going to have to have more durable uniforms or more frequent reunions." A parenthetical note adds: "Still a batchelor (sic) even after a great trip to France this fall."

The questionnaire-form for the new directory is now in the process of being examined and approved by appropriate experts such as Scotford and the Roger Burt printingestablishment in Hanover and will hit the mails by the middle of the month. Since no pertinent suggestions were received from the Class-at-large, it will be roughly the same as the last one, except to be pocket-sized for the benefit of those travelers who desire free room and board in various sectors inhabited by gullible and hospitable 1938'5.

In spite of the doldrums in which, as an organization, Boston finds itself, residents of the Bean Borough continue to make news. Ed White, dean of Mrs. Smalley's linguistic seminary in other years, has been named a member of the board of executives of H. P. Hood and Sons. He is general manager of ice cream sales, including the rather nauseating combination of licorice and orange which appeared all over this section at Hallowe'en time. I hope not to blame him for this monstrosity. Ed joined Hood's immediately upon graduation, after a brief sabbatical at Lake Boone to recover from the effects of passing Spanish. After various posts of salesmanship in the Maine area, interrupted by the late unpleasantness between us and certain other World Powers, he was promoted to assistant to the general manager of ice cream distribution, and since 1955 he has been western New England regional manager. Ed was chairman of the home solicitation program of the Wayland Community Chest in 1956. He is also an active member of the Vokes Players, and vice-president of the Wayland Senior High School PTA.

Moving south to the North Shore of Long Island, George Dana has been named a director of the North Shore Hospital. Dr. Dana was previously medical staff director of New England Center Hospital in the old Back Bay City. His picture gracing the pages of the Garden City paper looks prosperous, so I guess the medical profession needs little sympathy these days. Having just entered into a somewhat prolonged series of contacts with same myself, I can attest that there is little reason to weep copiously for the poor starving medicos.

Bridgeport, Conn., boasts of Richard T. Holt, now sales manager of the aircraft parts division of the Fenn Manufacturing Company of Newington. Newington is one of those villages you go through in avoiding more metropolitan areas, and you think you know where it is, then don't. My recollection is that it is a very pleasant place indeed in the typical Connecticut manner. At any rate, Mr. Holt, as the paper deferentially refers to him, joined the company last January as a district sales manager in the machinery division. Prior to that he had been with Pratt and Whitney for 18 years.

The genial Sox Calder, president of Union Bag-Camp Paper Corp. of New York, has been re-elected a director of the National Paperboard Association.

Dave Bradley is the author of "Journey of a Johnny-come lately" which was published last month by Dartmouth College Publications. The book describes the life and writings of the late John Clark '32, brilliant undergraduate and later a government official and newspaper editor. A review and advertisement concerning Dave's book appeared in the "Dartmouth Authors" section of last month's MAGAZINE.

And finally, to wind up a little short due to the Alumni Fund stuff appearing next door, Y. P. Dawkins manages to produce a son born on the best day of the year, Aug. 30, and of which I only just now hear yclept Robert Frate Dawkins. No further statistics were made available to the waiting public.
