Dartmouth men living in Lake, McHenry, or Boone counties in Illinois faced a problem in college loyalty when they went to the polls to pick a Republican candidate for state senator from the Bth district. Robert McClory '3O, who has served as state representative since 1950, had as his opponent Robert E. Coulson '33, Mayor of Waukegan. Since a sizable group of Dartmouth men live in the Illinois Bth district, and each alumnus had received an appeal for his vote from the rival candidates, this contest was followed with special interest in Waukegan, where the Dartmouth complication was noted in the local press.
Both Coulson and McClory have been active in civic affairs. Before becoming Mayor of Waukegan in 1949, Coulson was Assistant State's Attorney for nine years. His work during this period earned him the reputation for being an authority on problems of juvenile delinquency. McClory, a lawyer, was a member of the Lake County Republican Central Committee.
Late Flash: McClory won.
