Coach Tom Dent continues his search for a goalie, meanwhile winning his share of games by overpowering and outscoring the opposition, despite a still-porous net protection. He finally shifted Al Fiertz from the midfield to the nets, a move that paid off against Harvard, when the Green won 9-5, but which was something less than terrific against RPI, when Dartmouth lost by the score of 12-9. In the Harvard encounter, Fiertz looked good until the second half, when the Crimson tide came in to score three quick points and tie the score at 4-4. After that, however, the Green came to life, aided by brilliant work of Dave Thielscher, and coasted to a 9-5 victory.
The star of the Harvard game was the aforementioned Thielscher, who led the scoring with three goals. The agile and burly footballer started the scoring in the first period, after five minutes of the game. He was followed shortly after by Dick Gates, who made it two-love for Dartmouth. In the second period, Thielscher scored again, along with Charlie Jacob of the Green. In the final stanza, Dick Fowler, Tom Corcoran, and Captain Ed Lyon made the three additional tallies that clinched the game for the visiting (Dartmouth) team.
As we write, the abbreviated season has only two more contests—against Williams and New Hampshire. This has been a building year, with considerably more success than was forthcoming in last year's dismal season. Much of the present attack power of this year's team is concentrated in the sophomore class—i.e., Thielscher and Gates, among others. If Coach Dent can bring up some more talent from this year's powerhouse freshman aggregation (that goes around beating the Harvard freshmen 13-4, for example), things should be looking even better next spring. It is rumored that there is even a goalie on the freshman team.
