During the summer the College announced two organizational changes affecting the administration of the plant and Baker Library.
The Department of Buildings and Grounds has been incorporated into a new department known as the Plant and Operations Department, and has been combined with other related operational functions. Richard W. Olmsted '32, with the new title of Business Manager for Plant and Operations, has general responsibility for the College's physical plant, operation of dormitories and dining halls, housing and purchasing.
Miss Jeanette Gill will continue as Manager of the Dartmouth Dining Association in the Plant and Operations Department.
Three new appointments have been made in the reorganized department: James D. Wilson, Superintendent of Maintenance, who received the B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Arkansas, where he was formerly with the Physical Plant Department; John F. Rhilinger, Purchasing Agent, formerly Purchasing Agent for ten years for the McElroy Manufacturing Corporation in Littleton, Mass.; and Lewis B. Ely Jr., Assistant Chief Engineer of the Heating Plant, a graduate of the Pennsylvania Maritime Academy, who has had work with the Merchant Service and inshore installations. Bertram G. Sargent, former Assistant Chief, has been made Chief Engineer of the Heating Plant; and J. Gordon Cloud, with the College for 26 years, has been made Assistant Superintendent of Maintenance.
Baker Library also has received a general reorganization under the direction of Richard W. Morin '24, Librarian. To increase its efficiency, the Library has been divided into three sections, each with its own director. The Department of General Services is headed by Ellen F. Adams, Assistant Librarian, who has supervision of a group of departments, including the medical, periodical, reference and circulation libraries. The Acquisition and Preparation Department is under the direction of William R. Lansberg '38; while the Special Collections Department is headed by Edward C. Lathem '51, who is in charge of Archives and rare books.
Other administrative appointments during the summer included President Dickey's naming of Arthur H. Kiendl Jr. '48, Assistant Dean of the College, as Director of Student Counseling. Mr. Kiendl continues as Assistant Dean but will also be responsible for developing and coordinating the work in student counseling formerly centered under the general supervision of the Dean of the College. Eugene Hotchkiss III '50 has been named Assistant to the Dean of the College and will take over some of Mr. Kiendl's previous duties.
Davis Jackson '36 returns to Hanover as Assistant to the Director of Admissions. Formerly Assistant to the Dean of the College, he was associated with the National Life Insurance Company in Montpelier, Vt„ and recently was released from the Navy as a Commander. A newcomer to the administrative staff is Michael McGean '49, named Assistant to the Secretary of the College, with duties related to alumni class and club activities as well as public relations. He recently served with the Army in Germany. He and his wife, the former Lois Waring, were World and U.S. National Pair Figure Skating Champions.
