James P. Poole, Professor of Botany and member of the Committee on Educational Policy, is the author of the second of the series of articles appearing in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE on the educational program and policy of the College. A graduate of the University of Maine in 1912, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Professor Poole received both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard. There he was first an Austin Teaching Fellow and later an Austin Scholar. After serving on the faculties of Washburn College, Topeka; Kansas State College and the University of Wyoming, he came to Dartmouth in 1922 as Instructor in Evolution. In 1923 he was made Assistant Professor, and in 1927, Professor of Evolution. In 1936 he became Professor Botany. Professor Poole is the author of numerous articles appearing in scientific journals, a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of several other scientific societies.
