No wonder Ike got off to such a flying start - with a good Dartmouth man as his right bower - Sherman Adams '20! Of course, he could have had the additional value of another five years' experience if he'd picked a '15er!
Howard Stearns reports he is still teaching Physics at Simmons College "with a fair average of success and failure." Gordon Ferrie Hull's teachings were really "for keeps!" Howie's son graduated from Yale Divinity School last June and was ordained in the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church on June 12. A week later he was married to Barbara Holmes of Benton Harbor, Mich., in the chapel at Earlham College in Richmond, Ind.. where Barbara was graduated in 1949. Since July 1, Howard Jr. has been pastor of the Wildermere Beach Congregational Church of Milford, Conn., where he was formally installed December 7.
I wish all classmates could have the benefit of an inspiring letter from Dick Merrill about Ted Wilson. It was a beautiful tribute to a life devoted to his fellow man.
Occasionally, a class notice comes back with an intimation that because he was with us only a semester or so at Hanover, the member feels he has little to offer that would interest other classmates. I am sure we all know members who were actually in Hanover only a short time who are keenly interested and take active part in class doings, and who retain their feeling of "once a classmate, always a classmate." We urge any reluctant classmate to get aboard '15's band wagon and partake of the fellow- ship it offers.
Echoes of New Year's parties have drifted in. Details seem to be sketchy, however. It would appear that the Russ Rices and the Dale Barkers helped the Bud Does to properly christen the new-born year. Eben Clough claims a "belated 39th birthday" on the first of the year, which celebration included a cock- tail party at a next door neighbor's in Ipswich, a few townsfolk in to heist a few, a "Happy Birthday" rendition on the according by a local fireman, music led by the local soprano of the Episcopal church, whilst a deaf and dumb boy tended bar! In addition to cleaning up the clam chowder left over from the night before, they finally landed in on the ChanFosters and helped themselves to more turkey and fixin's. All in all a momentous "39th" birthday to start off the New Year!
That famous Springfield barrister RayKing was spotted the other day coming from the direction of the Boston City Hall, carrying a zipper brief case but not in the conventional manner. The case was only half zippered as the package inside was too large the evidence was only circumstantial, however.
A tropical beauty - A Hula Girl from the beach at Waikiki - comes in on a picture post card from Honolulu. Johnnie Johnson says she was asking after Eben Clough! Johnnie saw Al Livingston, Milt Ghee and TommyTomfohrde in San Francisco, en route to the Far East. Johnnie reports that Jack Bowler and Dick were down to his place on the Cape, prior to his leaving.
We regret very much to report the sudden passing of Hap Leonard while on a business trip late in January. Details will be found in the In Memoriam section.
Art Nichols is back, looking and feeling fit. His account of their trip is one for the book! Three and one-half months - most of it on the briny deep - cargo vessel 24 day to Capetown via Trinidad, up the East African coast 17 stops along the way - to the Mediterranean, Genoa, Marseilles then to London, and on home. Incidents, anecdotes, experiences - to whet the appetite! Here's an amusing one: At Mombosi, Port of Kenya, they put up ashore for several days at a charming motel-like spot - huge high-ceilinged room with heavy mosquito nets draped around each twin bed, with hanging contraptions above to get the nets out of the way during the day. The first night was hot and breathless. What with zooming insects inside and caterwauling tropical birds outside, interspersed with boisterous wranglings beneath their windows in Swaheeli dialect, sleep didn't come easily. Just as they were finally dropping off about dawnish wham-bang on the door. Art roused up enough to call out: "What is it? Go away." "Bwana, Bwana," was the answer. It became insistent, so Art untangles himself and goes to the door. There stands a big black fellow in long flowing white gown, with a gleaming smile and a tray. It's the Swaheeli house boy. "Cha, cha," he says. "We don't want any tea," says Art, "All we want is sleep." No sale! The house boy has brought tea and tea they're going to get. Art surrenders and in stalks the genii-like figure, places the tray on a stand, and, with the same gleaming smile, strides over to the empty bed. With astonishing dexterity and in one fell swoop, he swirls the mosquito netting around off the bed and up onto the overhead contraption. With hardly a pause he then strides over to the other bed where Charity is enmeshed in all her glory and, before Art can utter a word - swoosh, off and up goes the other net. (For the record Charity still retained a sheet!) So, with streaks of daylight beginning to show through the windows, Art and Charity had their pre-breakfast tea! Art swears, in spite of their protestations to the proprietor, this was the ritual every morning they were there.
Just to make your collective mouths water, here are several cost of living items fresh out of Capetown: Scotch, 171/2 cents per drink; liqueur - 28 cents per drink; wine - 38 cents per half bottle; hotel including meals — $4 per day; Scotch by the bottle — $2.50 (Art insists this was "purely medicinal." I'm going to look up his doctor!) Anyway welcome back, Nick!

Sailing on the 5.5. Camiyama - United Fruit Line — on February 5, Dale and BessBarker were scheduled for a 17-day trip to Panama. With a select list of only a dozen or so passengers, it should be good fun and plenty of restful sunning.
Esther Wing reports that Howie is back home again recuperating from a recent operation. Incidentally, "Get Well" cards help a lot when a fellow's been laid up! The address is: 577 School Street, Lowell, Mass.
Russ Rice was looking forward to the Freshman Fathers' weekend in February. There were several going up to Hanover from Needham anticipating some good fun.
When you realize these Notes must be written a good month or more before publication, I trust you fellows will overlook any slight discrepancies in timing. There are still a lot of "counties unheard from!"
