At the Boston Alumni Fund dinneron March 26, the James B. ReynoldsTrophy for 1952 was awarded to Roscoe A. Hayes '19 as the best class agent25 years out of college. He was cited asfollows:
The James B. Reynolds Trophy is presented each year to a class agent of a class more than twenty-five years out of college in recognition of extraordinary service to the College through the Alumni Fund. In making this award for the 1952 campaign the Fund Committee is delighted to honor an alumnus who has served Dartmouth as an agent for five consecutive years.
They have been five years of marvelous Alumni Fund growth for this World War I class. The year before this man took over the agentship, 224 members of his class contributed to the Fund. By last year the number had jumped to 273, from 81% of scoring base to 106%. And in 1952 this class contributed more than ever before, more than $14,000. Throughout his term of service this man has never failed to achieve his assigned dollar objective, never failed to exceed the Fund participation average. And in his final campaign last year his skill and patience produced 25 more contributors than had ever given before in thirty-three years of alumni life.
Surprisingly, despite constant improvement and an excellent 1952 record, this agent has never known the satisfaction of Green Derby victory. Never far off the pace, with three second places and one third, he should give ample consolation and incentive to those agents who year after year do their utmost to stay with a few of those miracle agents of miracle classes. For there is plenty of room in almost every class for the kind of growth and achievement we are honoring in this man and this class tonight. As he himself will tell you: "no class member is hopeless and no gift is so small as to be worthless." This he has proved, and thus he has earned the appreciation and congratulations we now bestow.
