THE annual spring meeting of Dartmouth alumni officers took place in Hanover on the weekend of May 8-9, attended by 180 alumni officers from out of town and some 80 wives. Among those who were guests of the College were class secretaries, treasurers and agents; club secretaries; class memorial gift and bequest chairmen; and, as an innovation this year, class presidents and chairmen.
In the absence of President Dickey, who was visiting Dartmouth alumni clubs on the Pacific Coast, John R. McLane '07, chairman of the executive committee of the Board of Trustees, greeted the officers at the Dartmouth House reception that opened the weekend program on Friday afternoon. That evening the various associations held their separate meetings with the following officers presiding: Class Secretaries, Elmer T. Browne '40, president; Class Treasurers, Sargent F. Eaton '11, president; Class Agents, Howard A. Stockwell '17, vice president; Club Secretaries, Gordon K. Wentworth '40, Alumni Council member.
On Saturday morning, before the joint meeting of all alumni officers, breakfast sessions were held by the class gift chairmen and by the class presidents and chairmen. Two members of the Alumni Council, F. William Andres '29 and Addison L. Winship II '42, were the respective presiding officers for these informal meetings. At the joint session in the 1902 Room, Baker Library, Mr. Browne presided and introduced as speakers Justin A. Stanley '33, Vice President of the College; Nichol M. Sandoe Jr. '45, executive secretary of the Alumni Fund; Prof. Joseph L. McDonald, Dean of the College; Prof. Herbert W. Hill, director of Hanover Holiday; and Mrs. Nadezhda Koroton, faculty associate in Russian Civilization.
Mr. Browne was toastmaster at the annual joint dinner that evening in Thayer Hall, where Mr. McLane and William T. Chafee 3rd '53, president of the Interfraternity Council, were the principal speakers. As a highlight of the dinner, awards to the "Class Officers of the Year" were announced by Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, and Charles E. Widmayer '30, editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Richard M. Pearson '20 was honored as Class Secretary, Donald Brooks '17 as Class Treasurer, and Donald P. Cole '19, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Washington, D. C., as Club Secretary of 1953. Their citations are printed elsewhere in this issue.
To President and Mrs. Dickey in Seattle, Wash., the alumni officers gathered for the annual dinner sent the following wire: Biggest gang of alumni officers ever assembled in Hanover miss you tonight. We send you and Mrs. Dickey our cordial and affectionate greetings and the pledge of continuing support towards an ever closer Dartmouth family."
