One of the best spring teams at Dartmouth has been Coach Tom Dent's lacrosse squad. The Big Green stickmen have won four and lost only one contest in regular play and if they get past Williams and R.P.I, they will rate as one of the best teams in the East. In the contests to date the Big Green walloped M.I.T. 16-3, defeated Syracuse 8-4 and Harvard 10-7, but lost to Yale 13-5 and then swamped Union College 20-13.
The Dartmouth lineup, for most of the games, has John Wetzel at goal, Captain Tom Bloomer, Phil Fenton and Stearns Martin on defense, Steve Sanderson, Sandy Learnard and Charley Jacob at midfield, and Lenny Lenhard, Dick Gates and Rudi Thielscher on the attack line.
The Dartmouth attack has been a strong point of the team, while the defense has been slightly weak and the midfield rather spotty. In some cases, noticeably in the Yale contest, a lack of adequate reserves has handicapped the team, but generally speaking it has made good progress and has hopes of defeating a strong R.P.I, team in the final game.
High scorer for Dartmouth is Dave "Rudi" Thielscher, the 200-pound junior from Buffalo, N. Y., who plays end on the varsity football team and defense on the hockey squad. Thielscher has twenty goals to his credit, seven of these collected in the Union game. Gates and Lenhard are also right up there in scoring honors with over ten each, while the other goals are divided evenly among the attack men and midfielders.
Both head coach Tom Dent and assistant coach Bud Brady are. pleased with the way the team has come along. The 13-5 loss to Yale was, of course, a disappointment. Yale had a strong team and caught the Indians in a tired state after they had squeaked by Harvard 10-7 the day before. More important, the four-deep Blue midfield was unusually strong and kept pressure on the Big Green throughout the contest.
