On April 29 Dartmouth men of San Diego enjoyed two of the most delightful gatherings it has been the pleasure of this scribe to encounter in many a year. Dartmouth was in town again as Mr. and Mrs. Dartmouth visited the opposite corner of the U.S.
President Vance Dickerman attended the Los Angeles dinner the night before and then drove President and Mrs. Dickey southward the following morning. Mrs. Dickey was entertained at luncheon by Mrs. Dickerman while Prexy met with 30 alumni at the San Diego Club. With impressive vigor and an enthusiasm which we have grown to expect from Dartmouth leaders, he made his position crystal clear on the subject of communism in American education.
At the close of his talk he received from Parker Meade, San Diego's unofficial Chamber of Commerce and Dartmouth's chief guide in the wilderness of the Southwest, a set of pictorial brochures to enable him to enjoy a vicarious trip through the county as he rolls Eastward on his trip home.
Another group gathered at cocktail time at the Admiral Kidd Officers Club with RAdm.and Mrs. Howard Shaffer as host and hostess. Fifteen couples had the pleasure of meeting Mr. and Mrs. Dickey on a more informal basis and even the unbelievable rain storm failed to dampen any spirits. Following the dinner which was served early to accommodate train schedules, Mr. Dickey entertained with a brief outline of a "My Day" at Hanover. Just as he was warming up to the subject, time was called, and the two visitors were rushed off to the railroad station.
In those final few minutes as we hurried them across the platform through the unusual downpour and helped them board the train, we felt we had had a most important, unusual experience. We in San Diego feel we have two grand new friends in Chris and John Dickey and to them both we say with warm affection, "Hurry Back Soon!"
