Late in the evening of Saturday, August 21, a car plunged off the road into Eagle River, near Gilman, Colorado. Fatally injured in the crash was our beloved classmate, Milt Kramer. Milt was driving into Denver to take a plane East when the tragic accident took him from us.
Those of us. who lived and worked with Milt through four years of college know full well the grievous loss to our Class, to Dartmouth, and to the nation. His outstanding record is familiar to us all - Chairman of Palaeopitus, Editor of The Dartmouth, Phi Beta Kappa, Valedictorian. It was his strength of character, his qualities of manhood, courage, sympathy, kindliness and understanding which culminated in his fitting selection as a Rhodes Scholar. Truly, Milt's achievements were evidence of his vast potential for future service.
It was only a few short months ago that we listened as he asked if we had "taken a big enough drink from the trough" of liberal arts education. Now that person who, of us all, had perhaps taken the biggest drink - the person who typified man's drive for the un- attainable in the light of his ultimate concern - is no longer with us.
Yet one thing is certain. All that Milt accomplished and all of the outstanding qualities that he embodied will forever stand as a source of inspiration to those of us who remain behind.
