DARTMOUTH begins its 188th academic year as the ALUMNI MAGAZINE launches its 17th. Two of Dartmouth's newest growing points as the year opens are treated this month by George H. Colton '35, executive secretary of the Dartmouth Development Council, and Frank Pemberton, director of the Dartmouth News Service. In his article "The Working ofhe Religious Element" (Page 20) Mr. Colton writes about the William Jewett Tucker Foundation and its "emerging pattern of thought and action." Mr. Pemberton in Theindividual and the College (Page 24) describes the purposes and content of the new first-semester course required of all freshmen.
Three short photo features this month deal with the Liveliest Point of the Summer (Page 26) which was the camp Softball tournament, New Faculty Faces (Page 31) and the football lettermen back this fall (Page 38).
