THE 65-man Dartmouth football squad blew into Hanover on the tail end of Hurricane Carol, watched movies ten days later during Hurricane Edna and scrimmaged today (Sept. 13) in a drenching downpour. In between the hurricanes and rain, the Dartmouth squad had some beautiful days to hold their twice-a-day workouts, and at this writing the Dartmouth squad looks as fine both physically and mentally as any we've seen.
The Dartmouth soccer squad, 30 strong, reported to Coach Tom Dent on September 13 to begin workouts, and the cross-country squad has been straggling back daily to get into shape on a more or less informal basis.
The activity at the Alumni Gymnasium has quickened after a rather lethargic summer. Red Rolfe, Dartmouth's new Director of Athletics, spent a busy summer in the gym studying reports, discovering where all the files are located, learning the names of the staff, and studying the complications of scheduling, recruiting and ticket selling.
The outside DCAC crew had a busy summer. New steel stands were erected on the east side of Memorial Field, all seat numbers were repainted, the rest room and concession facilities refurbished and a new radio booth (for WNAC and the Yankee Network which will carry the Dartmouth home games this fall) installed atop the press box.
Next week Dartmouth College swings wide its portals for the 186th year, and on Saturday, September 25, the Holy Cross Crusaders invade Hanover to discover if the Indians have recovered from the 27-6 pasting absorbed in last fall's opener before some 12,000 paying customers and a few million TV viewers of the Manning Bowl in Lynn, Mass.
So while we're in the mood, let's move right into the football situation.
