IN his article last month about the Tucker Foundation, George H. Colton '35 wrote of the search for a leader of the Foundation's program who will have broad responsibility for the "working of the religious element" in the life of the College. At their annual fall meeting last month the Dartmouth Trustees voted that the title of the new man shall be Dean of the Tucker Foundation.
The appointment of such a Dean was recommended to the Trustees by the Committee Advisory to the Tucker Foundation, which last month acquired four new members, headed by Earl R. Sikes, Professor of Economics, whom President Dickey has named chairman. The other members newly appointed to fill vacancies are John H. Wolfenden, Professor of Chemistry; John W. Masland, Professor of Government and George H. Colton '35, executive secretary of the Dartmouth Development Council. Three continuing members of the advisory committee are Prof. Roy B. Chamberlin, Director of Chapel; Donald Bartlett '24, Professor of Biography; and Henry B. Williams, Professor of English.
Professor Sikes as chairman succeeds Prof. Francis L. Childs '06, who since his retirement last June has been serving as Consultant to the President on Tucker Foundation affairs. Professor Childs is now directing a wide canvass of possible candidates for the new Deanship, which will be a faculty position of the first rank.
Also in the months immediately ahead the Dartmouth Development Council will be seeking additional gifts to support the work of the Tucker Foundation. At least $500,000 is needed in order to translate into reality the plans for furthering the moral and spiritual goals of the College.
