There can be little doubt about it now. This is one of Dartmouth's best swimming teams and John Glover, the Indians' All-American freestyle ace, is one of the best in the nation. Since the last report Karl Michael's varsity swimmers have won two meets and lost one to give them an overall record of six wins against one loss.

The lone defeat, as was expected, came during the Winter Carnival weekend when the Indians fell before Yale 53-31. The Elis swept seven of the ten events for their 105 th win in dual-meet competition. Yale's Kerry Donovan set a new pool record of 22.7 for the 50-yard freestyle, but then finished third behind teammate Sandy Gideonse and Dartmouth's John Glover in the 100-yard event. Rip Coffin and Phil Pendleton of the Green finished one-two in the backstroke, while the 400-yard freestyle team of John Heyn, Tom Kelsey, Steve Mullins and Duke Hust managed to defeat Yale in that event, no mean feat.

In their most recent outing the Indians got back into the win column by edging Princeton in the Dillon Gym Pool 44-40. John Glover set a 220-yard freestyle pool record of 2:08.5, while Coffin set a record in the 200-yard backstroke by cutting a full second from Neil Bersch's 1953 record. Glover also won the 100-yard freestyle event followed by Duke Hust, who won the 440. Dartmouth's Jack Hodgson won the 150-yard individual relay, while Jim Venman took a first in the dive.

The Indians should have little trouble getting past Cornell and Syracuse in their remaining dual meets, but then will face a real challenge at the Eastern Championships at Princeton and the NCAA meet at Syracuse. Glover and the relay team will carry Dartmouth's top hopes in these meets.
