After a late-January, lopsided victory over Boston University, 70-32, the varsity track team resumed action in mid-February and was edged by Harvard, 542/3 to in one of the closest meets ever seen at the Alumni Gymnasium track.
Junior Doug Brew, Dartmouth cross-country captain and one of the finest runners in Dartmouth track history, set new Dartmouth cage records as he won both the mile and two-mile race in times of 4:18.2 and 9:45.1 respectively. Brew also ran the opening lap in the final event of the afternoon, the two-mile relay, and put the Indians out front, but the Crimson's third and fourth runners overtook Dartmouth to win the event and the meet.
Dartmouth's pole vaulting trio of Bill Buchanan, Captain Lou Metzger and Will Springer swept their event, with Springer going 13' 4" for the first time in his career. Icelandic student WTillie Einarsson took first place in the broad jump and second in the shotput for the Indians, with Springer second in the broad jump and third going to John Chapman, who took first in the 45-yard high hurdles. Veteran George Bixby won the 35-pound weight toss with 51' 9½"- But weakness in the dash and middle-distance events, plus the crucial loss in the two-mile relay, was costly for the Indians.
Coach Ellie Noyes' team now has a record of two wins and one loss in dual-meet competition. Meets with Brown, Yale and Columbia plus the IC4A and Heptagonal meets remain ahead.
