There are going to be some better looking irons cruising up the five-and-ten this June than there were in '42 ... with doubtless less time spent in Hampt... and probably more avoirdupois behind the wheel... but the same lads are going. Preliminary reports indicate that our attendance estimates were about 50% south and going souther every day.
Ran into Don and Lela Hinkley last night at a local dance emporium. They're all set to make the migration on June 18. Had word from Kalamazoo, Mich'., today from HomerBogart, advising that he plans to make the excursion ... has a couple of extra seats in the Roadmaster for any lads in the area looking for a ride. Homer has scheduled his wife Dorothy to have had their "third heir and second Dartmouth prospect" prior to departure. They have a daughter, Bonnie, 7, and a son, Gary, 4. Homer is sales engineering for Kalamazoo Vegetable Parchment, after capital gaining on a chemical distributorship, and is logging about 75,000 miles a year in the ozone ... so keep your eyes open next time you're at the airport. The guy raising all that Cain with the poor little clerk in blue will probably be him.
Also had word the other day from the archives of the New York Public Library advising That Al Whitlock is tuning up his engine for a - flight to Hanover this June. Frankly, I've run into very few of the lads who won't be going, and then they're doctors who are on some trick schedule or some diplomatic functionary, who have just been awarded a portfolio.
You're going to be very pleased when you see what the '44 ROUND-UP has brought together up there on the Plain in June. I'm sure looking forward to seeing some of those lads again ... even Fletch and Chief Furguson. I'm sure you are too.
"deceived a casual postal from the Stork Club the other day. It was from Pinky Corwith the stimulating message, "Just in for a coke." Some weeks ago Pink and Ro joined old Sherm in the Cub Room of the Bird for the TV show and were panned very nicely. Rocky Davidson down in Washington was so pleased to see his old KP companion on the airwaves that he sent a wire of congratulations right to the Stork. These lads will be on hand.
" When you run into Horace Blood, do him the courtesy of not asking what he's specializing in. For your confidential information it is "Otorhinolaryngology" and "Bronchoesophagology." That's almost as hard to spell as "delicatessen."
Dr. Jim Deakins, of King of Prussia, Pa., was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Korea where he served with that tough New York outfit, the 7th Infantry Division. In addition he received the Combat Medical Badge, the Korean Service Medal, a handful of battle stars, etc., ad infin.
I've forgotten whether or not I publicly vilified Marsh Clark by associating him with Compton Advertising Agency, but do know that a recent communication sent to our reunion publicity chairman was addressed to Compton... only to be returned with the notation that Mr. Clark was a member of Benton & Bowles. My apologies.
To give you a bit of preliminary background on the '44 ROUND-UP, the date again is June 18-20, Friday noon through Sunday. You can get into your reserved dorm rooms at 1 p.m. Friday You can show the barkeep at the D.O.C. House how to mix martinis starting at 5½ bells.... We'll have a buffet supper there, then have a reception in the garden of President Dickey's home, and trot down to the Gym for the Alumni Dance. Our tent will be open for business, of course.
A long breakfast hour the next morning. ...Then we leave the ladies (Ad Pemberthy has got a good deal lined up for the girls) and have a class meeting with class movies, etc. (good show here) and have our pitchers took before noon.... A general alumni luncheon at the Gym ... and then like in days of yore when you raced your autos in reverse, we head down to Lebanon where, at the Country Inn, we shall hold, what is gently described as an "outing." The committee has this well organized so that whatever your tastes, you'll have a whale of a good time. This can of course go on indefinitely, but if you enjoy the theatre, you've got the Dartmouth Players going on at 9:30, and naturally the class tent will be alive, and you can listen to everybody tell you what a swell guy you really are.
Sunday morning we'll have a late breakrast, a memorial service at the Bema, and a buffet luncheon at the Ledyard Dance Club. Nothing scheduled for the afternoon... and if you don't have to rush off you can go up and dribble around the golf course.
I've only touched on the highlights ... more details later. .
Hal Wever, who has worked with Hooker Electrochemical Co. in Niagara Falls since leaving school, will head up his company's Chicago sales office. Down Washington, D. C., way Jim Hardigg has joined Container Laboratories, Inc.... Pleased to report that the Gordon Plummers had a new son and heir January 22, Stephan Curtis The CharlieRegans and Art Saul worked their way up to Hanover last month.
Let me know if you have any transportation problems in getting to Hanover in June. We'll be working out some car-pooling arrangements where practical, and I'm sure can help you out.
