I thought I had the space for the May notes pretty well allocated with the story about one of our colleagues who "touched off a hunt for a shipwreck and treasure that experts believe may have inestimable historic and monetary value," and had planned to entitle the piece, "Will Success Spoil Rog Feldmarit" But my pal Needle Allen wrecked it by getting the whole 2000-word story in the Class Letter last weekl Of course, it is worth repeating that Rog's find is in an area where $65,000,000 worth of sunken treasure is estimated to be. Rog says he'll settle for only 10%.
Keep your channel tuned to the "$64,000 Question" and you'll probably see another of our fortune hunters. Al Barrett is on tap in the baseball category. Al was selected as Man of the Year by the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Knapp agency, and like all good businessmen, gave the press a picture of himself back in the days when. Al and Pat have four youngsters, the latest addition, Barbara, arriving last November 2. When he's not stalking an insurance prospect or reading baseball statistics, Al is scouting Maryland's potential for Dartmouth as enrollment chairman for the state. GusPratt (with Crosse & Blackwell) and Jack Jenness (with Continental Can) are now over there in Baltimore with Al.
Bob Colwell sent me a clipping from the Herald Trib with a good picture of Phil Penberthy and the announcement of his election as vice president of Lennen & Newell advertising agency. One of New Rochelle's most enthusiastic boosters, Bob goes on to say:
"Another of the wandering members of '44 has found his way to the Queen City of the Sound. On receiving the Fund campaign cards from the head solicitor, it was discovered that one, Al Pickard, had been at Fort Slocum since September last. I found that he is an instructor there with the Army Information School, as a civilian employe of the Army. Although he is supposed to be teaching History and Government, it is obviously good Army sense that they immediately put him to work teaching Public Speaking. At the moment, he informs me, his students include men from Thailand, Formosa, Canada and dozens of other countries. He and his wife have a house a-building here in N.R. which he hopes will be completed before an expected arrival in May. Right now he is commuting from here to Hamden, Conn., where his wife Ruth is staying with Mrs. Pickard St. And in all the time he's been in Hamden, little did he know that he was only a short distance from both Fred Page and Bob Sunblad, two other fellow Theta Chi men."
Don and Lela Hinckley are now on the high seas, just a few laps behind Her Serene Highness. There was a great farewell party for them the night before they left and I can only hope that the seas are calm the first several days out. Don has been reconnoitering in Paris for the last several weeks but apparently spent more time exploring the automobile than house situation, and will have a new Austin Healey waiting for them at the dock, but no place to drive to. He'll be responsible for all Procter and Gamble foreign advertising and will get back to the States occasionally on his Canadian visits.
