September 15 conjures up two deadlines: quarterly tax returns and an AlumniMagazine deadline. Presumably classmates can take care of the first item and can't care less about the second, unless you are the secretary.

This column starts with a sad note about Griff Strasenburgh, one of our loyal classmates, who died of cancer on September 1. Our friendship dates back to the freshman trip in 1941 and continues through Marine Corps V-12, mini-reunions, and reunions (including our 40th in June 1985) until the news which appeared in The Wall Street Journal of September 5. Griff and his wife, Gina, as well as their children were loyal attendants at all class gatherings, and he was a longtime member of the class executive committee. More details will appear in this or another issue, but his passing creates a large void in the class of 1945. To Gina and their children we extend sincere class and personal sympathies. We also remind them as well as all 1945 families that we hope . they will continue to join friends at class gatherings.

By the time you read this, the mini-reunion will be over, Christmas shopping will be started - and perhaps the Leggats will have moved into a hew home in Westford with a tennis court on a much quieter street and two miles closer to the golf course. Post office address will stay the same - at least until authorities move the post office, which is scheduled for 1986. Classmates in the area are welcome to drop in, and directions to the new location should be easy to follow even for those 40 years out of college. The foregoing is one item that hopefully will not already have appeared in George Barr's excellent newsletter, mainly because it happened so quickly.

The rest of this decade will bring news of more retirements, and the latest is that of Don McNamara, who presumably left the presidency of Interpublic Group of Companies, an international advertising concern, on September 30. To Don and all retirees we send a special invitation to join us at mini-reunions, where you can renew friendships with classmates and with Dartmouth. And, as another suggestion, think of Alumni College in the summer. A distant cousin who never had any connection with Dartmouth until his daughter entered has regularly attended these sessions and finds them outstanding.

This was a sparse news month and help for future columns will be welcome. When you read this, you may be able to toast Dartmouth Ivy League Championship soccer, field hockey, or football. Any one is welcome. Happy Thanksgiving.
