The Harvey P. Hood Trophy for 1953 was presented to Class Agent Edward P. Offutt Jr. '35 at the Chicago Alumni Fund dinner on March 22. For being one of the year's most succesful class agents, he was cited as follows:
The Harvey P. Hood Trophy is awarded each year by the Alumni Fund Committee to the most outstanding class agent of those who serve the classes eleven to twenty-five years out of college. For the 1953 campaign, the award is made to a man whose work has been truly outstanding for all three years
he has served as head agent. Under his leadership this class has sought Green Derby victory with vigor and vitality. Second by nine points in 1951, missing by two in '52, and home a winner by five last summer, this agent achieved the second Derby triumph in the eighteen-year history of his class.
The competing classes gave ground reluctantly, as we have just seen. To achieve this sort of success was not easy. One of the finest participation records of any younger class had to be maintained. Last year, for instance, it was 496 givers for 91 percent of scoring base. In terms of dollars, a marvelous' three-year gain from $9,000 to $12,500 provided the desired margin.
These superb accomplishments are the result of careful planning, a flair for the artistic, imagination, initiative, and above all else, an uncommon enthusiasm for this work. His presence here in Chicago this evening, some 800 miles from the home base, is a striking example. He is making the tour which reaches Boston via Philadelphia and New York the end of this week his third "four-bagger" in four years and one small aspect of his program for winning another Derby in 1954.
The Fund Committee is proud to be able to recognize such distinctive service to Dartmouth College by the presentation of this Louis Orr etching of Reed Hall as a token of the Harvey P. Hood Trophy to EDWARD P. OFFUTT JR. of the Class of 1935.
