At the New York dinner of alumni fund class agents, March es, the James B. Reynolds Trophy for 1953 was awarded to Ellsworth B. Buck '14, as the best class agent 25 years out of college. He was cited as follows:
The James B. Reynolds Trophy is presented each year to a head agent of a class more than twenty-five years out of college in recognition of extraordinary service to Dartmouth through the Alumni Fund. For last spring's campaign the award is made to an alumnus whose inspired efforts have brought a "Famous Class" a new claim to fame.
The services of the agent we honor tonight were sought by determined classmates for some years. The wisdom of their choice has become obvious in his two short years on the job. Not only did this class provide the 1953 Fund with more dollars for Dartmouth than it had in any single previous year, but more individuals took part than ever before, a truly significant feat for a class 39 years away from Commencement.
The figures tell only part of the story but an impressive part. To the 1953 campaign 261 members of this class (115% of "scoring base") contributed $15,218 (127% of the class objective) for an average gift of almost $60. Among the contributors were 34 widows and other relatives of departed members, the second largest number of Memorial Gifts last spring. The interest and support of these friends has added strength, tangible and otherwise, to both class and college.
Sound organization, simplicity of approach, and a conscientious energetic follow-through have particularly characterized this man's Alumni Fund work. We can all be grateful for the force of his leadership on all our efforts.
It is indeed a privilege for the Alumni Fund Committee to add another page to the illustrious story of this individuals service to college and nation by testifying to his fine Fund achievement. The 1953 Reynolds Trophy in the form of a Louis Orr etching of Dartmouth is well-earned by ELLSWORTH B. BUCK of "The Famous Class of 1914."
