A newspaper, The News, of which Kent S. McKinley '21 is editor and publisher, made its first appearance on the news stands of Sarasota, Fla., on October 6. His wife, Marjorie McKinley, is vice president of the new publication and also continues as vice president of the Buffalo (N. Y.) News, a position she has held for some time. The McKinleys, who are both originally from Buffalo, went to Sarasota to live in 1947.
Sarasota's new daily, The News, has as its aim a non-partisan, accurate reporting of local and national news, and the stated objective of promoting good citizenship and public-spirited projects in the community. Kent McKinley has had an active business career, been a producer of plays, and in 1946 published his first newspaper, a weekly, the Watertown News. In 1952 he ran as Republican candidate for Congress from Florida's Seventh District, and for a Republican in a Democratic stronghold, lost by an unusually small margin. Florida Southern College this year awarded him the LL.D. degree at its 69th Founders Week Convocation.
In his present venture as newspaper editor, McKinley hopes to put to good use his practical knowledge of many phases of the modern scene, and to print a paper which will be "for the benefit of all."
