THOMAS E. 0'CONNELL '50, shown at his desk in Parkhurst Hall, last month assumed the administrative post of Executive Assistant to the President. He will serve as President Dickey's principal assistant, taking over some of the duties fulfilled by Edward T. Chamberlain '36, Executive Officer of the College, who this year is serving as Acting Director of Admissions.
0'Connell prior to his Dartmouth appointment was administrative assistant to the Director of Commerce of the City of Philadelphia. He began that work in 1952 after taking his Master's degree in public administration at Syracuse University. During the year immediately after his graduation from Dartmouth he was with the Basic Economic Corporation in Venezuela.
As an undergraduate, 0'Connell was voted the Barrett Cup after serving as president of the Undergraduate Council and winning many other honors. He won the Barge Medal and the Class of 1866 Prize for oratory, was outstanding with The Players, was elected class president in freshman year and president of Green Key in junior year, and was a member of Casque and Gauntlet and Psi Upsilon. Before entering Dartmouth he served in the Army Air Force from 1944 to 1946 and was discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant.
0'Connell is the son of Thomas J. 0'Connell '18 of Worcester, Mass., and the brother of Jeffrey O'Connell '51. He is married to the former Margaret Ann Ludlum and they have one child.
