The passing of our classmate, Springfield, leaves the Class of 1884 with only two survivors, Newell and the Acting Secretary. Newell is now the oldest living graduate of the College.
Springfield, after his graduation in 1884, entered the Thayer. School from which he later graduated and became by profession a civil engineer. His later years were spent in the West and South, but for the first few years after he finished at the Thayer School, he was engaged in construction work in New Hampshire. Among other projects he built the Hanover Water Works, which are still in use in the town and by the College, thereby leaving an enduring monument to his memory.
