Class Officers Weekend
June 1955

WITH a record attendance of 188 class and club officers, representing a 75-year span of classes from 1884 to 1958, the annual Alumni Officers Weekend was held in Hanover on May 6 and 7. Back as guests of the College for working sessions and social events were class secretaries, treasurers and agents; club secretaries; class gift and bequest chairmen; class presidents and executive committee chairmen; and reunion chairmen of classes returning to Hanover this June. The two-day program was directed by Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College.

Separate meetings were held by the eight different groups of class and club delegates. Presiding officers at these sessions were Reginald F. Pierce '46, president of the Dartmouth Secretaries Association; Stewart H. Steffey '41, president of the Dartmouth Treasurers Association; Ellsworth B. Buck '14, class agents' representative on the Alumni Council; Samuel H. Snow '40, club secretaries' representative on the Alumni Council; Henry S. Embree '30, chairman of the Alumni Council Committee on Class Gifts; Carleton G. Broer '27, chairman of the Alumni Council Committee on Class Organization, who presided over the meeting of class presidents and chairmen; John H. Davis Jr. '25 of the Alumni Council, who presided over the meeting of class bequest chairmen; and Michael McGean '49, Assistant to the Secretary of the College, who met with reunion chairmen.

Two panel discussions were features of the first-night meetings for class secretaries and club secretaries. The former heard a discussion of the new constitution being suggested by the Alumni Council for all classes; and the club officers held a panel session on "Alumni Clubs and Enrollment," of which Albert I. Dickerson '30, director of admissions, was chairman.

All the officers met in a joint session in the 1903 Room of Baker Library on Saturday morning, and that evening all attended the annual banquet in Thayer Hall. Mr. Pierce presided at both of these joint gatherings. At the Saturday morning session talks were given by Nichol M. Sandoe Jr. '45, executive secretary of the Alumni Fund; Mr. Broer, on the subject of class organization; and Edward T. Chamberlain '36, acting director of admissions, whose topic was "Enrollment and Admissions."

President Dickey was the principal speaker at the banquet, and George H. Cassels-Smith '55, undergraduate editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, spoke on behalf of the undergraduates. As an annual feature of the dinner, awards were made to the Class Secretary, Class Treasurer and Club Secretary of the Year. These honors were bestowed on Scott C. Olin, class secretary for 1950; Arthur H. Ruggles Jr., class treasurer for 1937; and Forrest C. Billings '28, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Hartford, Conn. Their citations appear with their class columns in this issue.

Before introducing Mr. Hayward for the presentation of the awards, Mr. Pierce called attention to the fact that this is Mr. Hayward's 25th year as Secretary of the College. The gathering stood and applauded and Mr. Pierce then read the following tribute:

For 25 years Sidney Chandler Hayward has been Secretary of Dartmouth College. As such, he has had the obligation and the opportunity to be our leader in the relation of the College to the alumni. At this meeting of alumni officers attended by some two hundred men, we wish to place on record our deep appreciation for what he has done for us and what he has been to us during this quarter of a century.

By his unfailing friendliness and tact, his quiet but adequate efficiency, his meticulous attention to detail, and yet his foresight and grasp of major matters, he has met his obligations and opportunities in a superb way. During this period there has been a notable advance over the high attainment of the previous years in alumni relationships and this advance has been due in large degree to the heart-warming influence of Sid Hayward.

President and Mrs. Dickey entertained the alumni officers and their wives at a reception at the President's House prior to informal dinner parties at the Hanover Inn and Thayer Hall on Friday evening. Athletic events Saturday afternoon and a concert by the Wellesley and Dartmouth glee clubs that night were also a part of the weekend program, which ended with an informal gathering of members and their wives in the Inn Ski Hut after the concert.
