The October ALUMNI MAGAZINE reported on a new social-residential facility for Dartmouth women, known as 1 Occom Ridge - not a sorority, its occupants insist.

Since that report, however, decisive moves have been taken to establish sororities at Dartmouth. One group of women has already formed "X X Delta," an outgrowth of the controversy surrounding Dartmouth's new di Suvero sculpture. With no house to call their own - they bill themselves as a "road-tripping sorority" - the women rally around "X Delta," on the Sanborn House lawn. Asked what would happen if the sculpture were to be moved, Lucy Townsend '77, leader of "X X Delta," replied, "I guess we'll just have to move with it."

On another tack, two sophomores, Penny Breed and Thayer Wendell, have contacted several national sororities regarding a chapter at Dartmouth. Though they are worried about the connotations of the term "sorority" and would prefer to establish a local organization, they have arranged to meet with representatives from Sigma Kappa and Phi Sigma Sigma.

Emphasizing that they are "not reacting against fraternities for guys at Dartmouth," and insisting that they are not "radical feminists," they are looking for a female counterpart to the system which they say provides "a sense of brotherhood extending beyond graduation for males."
