The Dartmouth swimming team under the tutelage of Karl Michael and Bob Clotworthy pulled a major upset in mid-February by beating a previously undefeated Harvard team, 49-37. In earlier February action the Big Green swimmers had romped over Pennsylvania, 74-12, and defeated Colgate, 51-35, to compile a record of five wins and two defeats.

The Dartmouth-Harvard meet was one of the most exciting seen at Spaulding Pool for some time. The Indians had rallied several times during the meet to take a slight 42-37 lead going into the final event - the 400-yard freestyle relay. Harvard's first two swimmers gave the Crimson an early lead in the relay, but Ernie Drosdick turned in a blazing performance to pull even and the Big Green anchor man, Bill Bahrenburg, pulled ahead to clinch the meet for Dartmouth.

Earlier Bahrenburg and Drosdick had teamed up to win the first two places in the 220-yard freestyle, while Tom Travis and Drosdick finished 1-2 in the 100-yard freestyle. Stu Summers won the diving for the Big Green, with Pete Anderson capturing the backstroke, Captain John Graf and Dave Beattie taking first and second in the 400-yard freestyle, and Bill McClung salvaging third place in the 200 yard breaststroke.

Against Pennsylvania, the Indians had an easy time as they swept to first place in every event, with Captain John Graf winning the 400-yard freestyle event.

Against Colgate, during Winter Carnival, Dartmouth's team strength came through as the Indians won, 51-35. Jack Daniels captured first in the 200-yard breaststroke and second in the butterfly to pace the Indians, with Stu Summers and Bob Michael winning first and second in the dive. Pete Anderson and Don McCree did likewise in the backstroke.

Yale, Syracuse, Cornell, Navy and the Eastern intercollegiates remain on the schedule. Yale, of course, seems unbeatable, but the Big Green should do well against the others and wind up again this year as one of Dartmouth's top winter teams.
