An improved Nordic (cross-country and jumping) squad and a better than average Alpine group (downhill and slalom) give Coach Walter Prager an optimistic outlook for the 1956 season. However, the Indians will miss the services of Japanese ace Chick Igaya, who will be competing for Japan in the Olympics. Six former Big Green skiers will be on the United States team, with Ralph Miller '55, Tommy Corcoran '54, Russ Carey '54, Bill Beck '52, Charlie Tremblay '52 and Brooks Dodge '51 competing in Italy.

Leading the Dartmouth ski team this winter is Pete Kirby, a member of the 1954 Canadian F.I.S. team and one of the top downhill and slalom specialists in the East. Egil Stigum and Dave Harwood, both veterans, are also crack Alpine skiers. Sophomore John Ceely in cross-country and Mai Hibbard, a sophomore jumping ace, will be leading Nordic contenders along with Monk Bancroft, Bob Burton and Dave Cassidy. Seniors Steve Swenson and Tony Carleton both are experienced downhill and slalom competitors, with Bernard Baehler and Roger Brown in reserve. Sophomore Bill Smith also shows promise of developing into a sound Alpine contestant.

January 13-14 is the annual Hanover Invitational Relay Race and Jump meet, and then the winter carnival circuit begins. The squad hopes to wind up the season with a trip to the N.C.A.A. Championships at Winter Park, Colorado.

Increasing Dartmouth's interest in skiing this year both at the recreational and competitive levels has, of course, been the new ski area being developed by the College at Holt's Ledge, Lyme, N. H. The principal downhill racing trail is being cut and may be used in February for the Dartmouth Winter Carnival meet. The Poma Ski Lift and other trails are expected to be completed next summer and fall, with the area being opened formally about January 1957. A limited fund-raising campaign for $125,000 to underwrite the initial costs of the new development is now under way at the College.
