Undaunted by reports that the bakemaster and his assistants were rank amateurs, 100 loyal alumni and friends appeared bibbed and hungry at the South Shore Club's first clambake, held August 25. Don Hawes '39, who somehow was prevailed upon to undertake the awesome responsibility of dispatching some 2,000 clams, 100 lobsters and countless ears of corn, faced up to his task with remarkable calm. The result was succulent. Herb Hickey '46N, soaked to the ears from the shower that descended from the lobster cracking table, was noble when informed that the last lobster was for the last customer and not for him. Among the gourmets were George Rowell '1B, Ethan Hitchcock '27, Jack Douglas '41, Don Stewart '36, Dan Ruggles '21, and Tris Mackinnon '31. Cliff Fuller '42, who masterminded the affair, says he thinks he can pursuade Don Hawes to do it for us again. We all hope so.
Prior to the clambake the Club sent to all members a directory of South Shore alumni. Any interested members who did not get one should contact the secretary. From time to time we hope to send out supplementary lists to keep the directory up to date.
