The appointment of Allison Merrill as assistant ski coach and assistant supervisor for the new Dartmouth ski area at Holt's Ledge was announced last month by John A. Rand '38, executive director of the Dartmouth Outing Club. Merrill, a former teacher and ski coach at Lebanon (N.H.) High School, coached the U. S. Olympic cross-country team this past winter and in 1954 was coach of the United States F.I.S. Nordic squad. His Lebanon teams for some years have been outstanding in the New England secondary school field. Merrill was graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1944.
Barlow Nelson, Dartmouth freshman from Tulsa, Oklahoma, won second place in the United States Junior National Skating Championships held in Philadelphia in March. Nelson has been competing for eight years and his brother, Franklin, was a member of the United States team at the recent World's Championships.
Overlooked in the maze of statistics at the end of last fall's football season was the important fact that the 1955 Big Green football team was the least penalized team of all major colleges in the nation. The Indians drew only 25 penalties and lost only 200 yards for their nine games. This was a remarkable feat when it is recalled that the Big Green was playing under a new system, and is a fine tribute to the players and Coach Bob Blackman and his staff.
Speaking of football, former Dartmouth coach Earl Brown (1943-44) and Mrs. Brown are the proud parents of a son, Mark Matthew, born February 19. The youngster weighed in at 8 pounds, ounces. Looks like a good prospect for the Big Green if the University of Michigan doesn't grab him first. He was born at the University hospital, so is probably already signed. The Browns have two other youngsters, Sally-Anne and Barry.
Last month we erroneously reported in these columns that the Dartmouth swimming team finished in fourth place in the Ivy League. Coach Karl Michael wants it known that the Indian swimmers tied for third place with Princeton. "It was tough enough to get a third-place tie," says Mike, "with Yale and Harvard always in first and second place, so let's give the boys credit for their fine performances in finishing third."
While on winter sports, Dartmouth's colorful basketball mentor Doggie Julian, who this winter piloted the Indians to the Ivy championship and an NCAA tourney berth, wants it known that he is organizing a "Help Julian Coach" Club for all alumni. Only membership requirement involved is either to attend a Dartmouth basketball game played in your area, or, if this is not possible, to recommend a good basketball player for Dartmouth. Write Coach Julian at the DCAC for your membership card sending in either your ticket stub or the name of the player being recommended.
Willie Einarsson, Icelandic exchange student at Dartmouth, was entered in a special Olympic year running of the hopstep-and-jump event at the annual Penn Relays in Philadelphia on April 27-28. Einarsson holds the Icelandic record in this traditional European event with a mark of 4911½" set in 1955.
