The Dartmouth freshman baseball club, coached by Eddie Jeremiah, has split six games to date, with two games remaining. The Pea Green team dropped the opener to Kimball Union Academy 9-7, then took a double-header from University of Vermont '62 by 4-3 and 4-0 scores. After a 9-8 win over Nichols Junior College, the Indians dropped their most recent contests, to Harvard 6-5 and to the University of New Hampshire 7-3. Robbie Cox and Van Dam are the top freshman hurlers, with the current lineup having Dave French at first, Art Hoover at second, Jeff Rush at shortstop, and Doug McPhail at third base. Archy Carlin and Lou Setti have also seen action in the infield. Jim Murar has been handling the catching chores. In the outfield are John Shaw, Dick Stillman and Carl Jaeger, with Bill Quirk moving in against left-handed hurling.
Coach Karl Michael's '62 lacrosse team has won one contest and lost three, with two games remaining. The Indians lost the opener to Exeter by a 10-3 score, defeated Kimball Union 9-5 and then lost to the Harvard freshmen and Deerfield by 10-4 and 14-3 scores. First-team players include Steve Rotter at ' goal; Andy Zigelis, Dick Dils, and John Thees at defense; Dave Usher, Clay Vaughn, John Williams and Earl Bill at midfield; and Tyko Kihlstadt, Dave Dickson, John Walters, Mike Silve and Mike Jackson on the attack line.
Best record of all was compiled by the freshman track team under Coaches Ellie Noyes and Guilford Joyner. The undefeated freshmen topped Brown, defeated Columbia 103-37, swamped Boston University 88-48, and walked over Harvard 101-39. Tom Laris, brightest distance runner seen here in a decade or more, continued to set records with a 4:15.3 clocking in the mile and 9:43.3 in the two-mile in the B.U. meet. Tom Komarek added a 1:56.7 record in the half-mile event and Al Gaudet tossed the hammer 147' 10", as four new freshman marks were recorded in the Boston University meet. The freshman mile relay team of Paul Armstrong, Tom Komarek, Kent Slaby and Dud Halligan also set a record time for that event with a clocking of 3:22.1.
The '62 tennis team, under Coach Red Hoehn, has three wins and three losses to date, with a 6-3 loss to Andover, a win over Deerfield, a 7-2 defeat by Harvard, and a 8-1 win over M.I.T. The current rankings show Jim Biggs playing number one, followed in order by Phil Meyer, Gordie Aydelott, Brad Wiley, Jeff Thomas, and Terry Bentley. Biggs and Aydelott are the number one doubles team, with Meyer and Wiley teaming up for the other doubles team.
The freshman golf squad does not offer too much hope to Coach Tom Keane. The Pea Greeners have won three and lost two to date with two more contests on the schedule. The wins were 5-2 over Andover, 5-2 over Amherst '62, and 4-3 over Nichols Junior College. They lost 5-2 to Harvard and 4-3 to Williams. Kent Graham plays the top position followed in order by Ted Judson, Ted Beal, Ellis Kern, Al McCrae and Lou Gordon. Pete Goronis and Pete Halvorson are two other top competitors on the team.
