As has been previously reported, this is the year that the Dartmouth Rowing Club has been building for ever since it was reorganized in 1951. The heavyweight and lightweight crews both face the most ambitious and challenging schedules in history including the Eastern Sprints, the Compton Cup Races and the annual I.R.A. Regatta.
Coaches Thad Seymour (heavyweights), Albie Povey (lightweights) and Phil Cole (freshmen) are reasonably optimistic about the results, although all caution that the Dartmouth crews this year are out to make the best showing possible and to become more firmly established in Eastern rowing circles, and do not have any large hope of upsetting the traditional Eastern powers like Cornell, Princeton and Harvard.
The lightweight crews are back from two weeks of practice at Annapolis, while the heavyweights work out at the Kent School in Connecticut. Results have shown that the Big Green crews, with a good nucleus of veterans back, are as strong as they have ever been. With the ice still covering large sectors of the Connecticut River, the oarsmen are going far afield in search of open water, but are getting in the daily practice needed and should be in top shape for the season's opening at Amherst.
