for John W. Newton '53 (r) at the Boston Alumni Fund dinner on April 1 when he was awarded the Harvey P. Hood Trophy, for the Head Agent of a class 11 to 25 years out of college, and also the Joshua A. Davis Trophy, signifying the greatest improvement in the 1969 Alumni Fund campaign. The awards were made by Lester R. Godwin '30 (1), Alumni Fund committee member, with the following citation:
It has been observed before that each decade seems to have one class which is consistently outstanding in its Alumni Fund performance. In the decade of the fifties, this is clearly the Class of 1953. During the past three years, under the able leadership of Jack Newton, 1953 has won its Green Derby competition each year, established new dollar records for the number of years out of college, been among the leaders in dollar improvement and led all classes in total number of contributors. In 1969, 1953 posted the best dollar improvement of all classes to place ninth in total dollars, breaking the $50,000 mark and becoming the youngest class by far to do so. When Jack Newton assumed the job as Head Agent in 1967, he remarked it would be difficult for him to equal the performance of his predecessors. The Alumni Fund Committee now officially designates Jack as a "tough act to follow" and proudly cites him as the outstanding Head Agent of a Class from eleven to twenty-five years out of College with this Harvey P. Hood Trophy Award.
