Returning from last year's varsity tennis squad, which won eleven matches and lost seven, are six lettermen to give Coach Red Hoehn a reasonably strong first team. The Big Green tennis squad went all the way to Miami, Florida, during spring vacation, but was defeated easily by the University of Miami (which plays year-round) by a 9-0 score. The Indians practiced several days in Miami for the return-trip matches with Navy and Penn, but both were cancelled because of rain.
On the basis of showings to date, Captain Dave Kerr holds down the number one spot, followed in order by Charles Kettering, Pete Buswell, Bob Smith, Al Maca and Tony Jenks. All are lettermen, with Kerr and Maca being the only seniors on the team. Kettering won a letter with the varsity three seasons ago, but has just returned from Army service.
Juniors Tom Schwartz and Steve Lampl, who saw limited action last spring, along with sophomores Dave Hoffman and Geoffrey Picket, are the other top candidates for squad positions.
Beyond these players there seems to be little talent, and Coach Hoehn's problem this spring, as in recent years, is one of depth. Practice sessions are still hampered by the late spring in Hanover, and with the opening match against M.I.T. set for April 20 and twelve more contests slated during April and May, the Big Green tennis players have their work cut out for them.
